What's New On Nob Hill: A 2026 Field Guide For Locals

If it has felt like the hill has been quietly reorganizing itself around you this year, that instinct is correct. After a long stretch in which Polk Street did most of the neighborhood's social heavy lifting, 2026 is pulling the center of gravity back uphill toward Huntington Park, California Street, and Grace Cathedral. Here is what has actually changed within a ten-minute walk of the cable car turnaround, and how the pieces fit together.

The crown of the hill relights

The single largest shift is at the corner of California and Taylor. The Huntington Hotel, the red-brick landmark perched atop Nob Hill, is back in business after a six-year shutdown, reopening in March with refreshed guest rooms, a revived Big Four, and a three-level Nob Hill Spa. The building had been closed since 2020, which means an entire cohort of newer neighbors has only ever known the address as a dark facade with a dormant neon sign.

That sign is on again. The hotel's iconic neon sign illuminated the San Francisco skyline for the first time in years ahead of the March relaunch, and Mayor Daniel Lurie appeared at the sign lighting, an unusually civic moment for what is technically a private hotel reopening.

The interiors are a full Ken Fulk reimagining. While the brick exterior remains unchanged, nearly every interior detail has been reimagined, designed by San Francisco-based Ken Fulk. Pink hallways are lined with abstract paintings, and the lobby's ceiling is filled with painted clouds. The crown jewel is the cocktail bar Arabella's. Arabella's is the one to know if you are hosting out-of-town guests and want to skip the Tonga Room routine, since the space, named for founder Collis P. Huntington's second wife, showcases decades-old spirits, including vodka from the USSR, and a bar cart from 1930s France.

Two details worth internalizing as a resident:

• The Big Four is once again a working restaurant, not a memory. At the heart of the hotel's revival is the return of The Big Four, the legendary restaurant long considered the unofficial clubhouse of Nob Hill. The intimate dining room reopens with updated interiors and a menu that balances beloved classics with newly imagined dishes.
• The spa is not the same footprint you remember. It is now a three-level wellness retreat featuring an indoor pool, treatment rooms, and city-view terraces.

On room count, the redesign favored size over inventory. The hotel now offers 71 guest rooms and 72 suites, a notably intimate count that reflects the building's famously generous room sizes, averaging around 581 square feet compared to an industry-standard 200. For context, that average room is larger than plenty of one-bedroom condos within a three-block radius.

"The Huntington has a built-in legacy for gracious suites, a beloved restaurant, and the most luxurious spa in town," Fulk said in a statement. "Our goal is to return that glean to our city's crown jewel by reimagining it as a grand residence with destinations for repeat visitors and locals alike."

The word to hold onto there is locals. The lingering question the neighborhood is actually asking, per whether the Big Four and the spa settle into a daily-life status or mostly stay a magnet for out-of-town guests, is one you get to answer with your own reservations.

A cathedral running on a different clock

Across California Street, Grace Cathedral has spent 2026 operating less like a landmark and more like a full-time cultural venue. If you have not been inside since the last time relatives visited, the interior is currently unrecognizable at night.

Aura will stay in Grace Cathedral until December 2026, end of the year. The immersive light-and-music show, produced by the Montreal studio behind similar installations at Universal and Disney, runs around 52 minutes, including the immersive multimedia experience and 15 minutes of pre-show. It is the rare cultural draw you can actually walk to in evening shoes, and the cathedral's own transit guidance, unsurprisingly, is Parking on Nob Hill is fairly scarce. If you need to drive, consider parking somewhere along the #1 California MUNI bus line.

The cathedral's weekly rhythm outside the show has quietly settled into something more useful for residents than for tourists. Classes are Tuesday evenings (starts at 6:15 pm, and doors open by 5:30 pm) and Saturday mornings (starts at 9:00 am, and doors open by 8:30 am). Practice is appropriate for all levels with expert instructors to live music. Yoga under the Gothic nave is a niche superpower of living on this hill.

And for the park directly below the cathedral, the Nob Hill Association's summer gathering has become a fixture worth blocking off. Meanwhile, Polk keeps the volume up

The western slope has not conceded anything. If the top of the hill is the drawing room, Polk is still the kitchen, and it is busier than it has been in years.

The most-photographed change of the year is a small one. Bob's Donuts didn't move far from its original spot but is sporting a more modern look and feel, with a redesigned Polk Street storefront that has kept the 24-hour queue for apple fritters intact while adding actual seating.

The bigger structural addition is still under construction. FITNESS SF Polk is scheduled to open in September 2026. The gym will be located at 1600 Jackson Street, in the heart of the Polk Gulch neighborhood, easily accessible from Russian Hill, Nob Hill, Polk Gulch, and Downtown SF. A recovery zone on this scale, with Red Light Therapy Pods, Infrared Saunas, Arctic Showers, Hyperice recovery tools, Human Touch massage chairs, HydroMassage beds, and Normatec Compression Therapy, has not previously existed within walking distance of this stretch of the hill.

One departure worth naming

Not everything is arriving. Two-Michelin-starred Sons & Daughters is moving from Nob Hill to a larger Mission District space at 18th and Florida streets. The new site combines a spacious dining room with open kitchen and a bar, and the restaurant hopes to re-open in late 2026.

Losing a two-star restaurant to another neighborhood would have been read very differently a year ago. In the current context, with The Big Four back on line and Restaurant Naides drawing a serious fine-dining crowd on Bush Street, the departure looks less like a hollowing out and more like a reshuffling of which addresses on the hill are wearing the tasting-menu crown. Worth watching whether the vacated space stays in the fine-dining category or turns over to something more casual, which would tell you something real about where the neighborhood's dining ambitions are heading.

What actually connects the updates

Read as a list, these are seven or eight unrelated openings and one relocation. Read together, they describe a specific reorientation. For most of the last decade, the interesting news on Nob Hill came from the western and southern edges, Polk and lower Nob, where the storefronts were smaller and turnover was faster. In 2026, the two biggest additions to daily life, the Huntington and Aura at Grace Cathedral, both sit within a block of Huntington Park. The park itself is now hosting the Nob Hill Association's largest summer event of the year. The hill is once again socially organized around its own summit, which is where the buildings were designed to point people all along.
